Do you have a way of connecting with people and their faith?

Creating a Christian blog to reach people you wouldn't normally connect with is an incredibly effective way of growing spiritually. (And can grow your bank account as well.)

You don't have to be a minister or work for a church, but you must love writing about your faith to create a blog.

Creating a Christian based blog is easier than you might think.

Choosing a niche, picking the right platform, all the way to determining a great domain name, or marketing yourself once it's all up and running may seem like a challenge.

We've reached out to some of the most successful Christian bloggers to get their advice on how to start a Christian blog.

Choosing a Christian niche

Julie Pfeifer is the owner of LovingChristMinistries.com. Her blog gets an average of 50,000 monthly page views and has grown her email list to 7500 subscribers.

For Julie finding a Niche is all about what excites you. She started her blog writing about grief as that drew her closest to God, but later pivoted to writing more about Christian Retreats.

When choosing a niche, Julie reminds us that are plenty of options.

Faith blogging can cover many topics, including bible studies and devotionals, but you can also incorporate your faith into any other topic, too.

You could have a finance blog, a mom blog, a craft or hobby blog, or a million others. What you write about might change over time, too.

Be Consistent

Choose a publishing schedule that you are comfortable with. Whether you choose to write your blog once a week or once a month, you must be consistent. Bill Tammeous, the owner of the Faith Matters Blog, writes daily.

Bill says, “post consistently at the same time each day. I set my posts to publish at 12:15 a.m. each day. But don't be afraid to update the post with something breaking if it's appropriate.”

Bill also insists consistency is also about your writing tone.

“Develop a consistent voice by being you. Decide how formal or informal you plan to be on your blog, and then stick relatively close to that. Don't be William Faulkner one day and 50 Cent the next.”

It's best to put out blog posts at regular intervals, so your readers know when to expect new content. If you're unreliable or sporadic, people are less likely to become loyal, frequent readers of your blog. To create a content plan, it's easy.

Prepare the content that you want to release for the week, and do some research to determine when your readers are most often on your blog.

Find High Traffic but Low Competition Opportunities

I know that sounds cliche, but there are a ton of bloggers out there.

As a new blogger, figure out what you're most passionate about and where there is a gap in the industry. Ashley Price of pricelesslyimperfect.com chooses to focus her faith-based blog on modern homemaking as it pertains to parenting and marriage.

The more of a specialist you are, the more you can reach your target market.

“I check neilpatel.com/ubersuggest and trends.pinterest.com to see what others are saying, what's getting a lot of search traffic but isn't highly competitive.” This specialist approach has worked well for Ashley. Here most popular post, “Biblical-Homemaker,” was shared 12,000 times.

Finding your specialty and target audience is necessary.

When starting a Christian or Faith-based blog, you need to pick a specific niche and target audience. Simply blogging about Christianity or Faith, in general, is too broad and will not get you any traction. Here are a couple of examples of niches you could use.

  • Christian marriage
  • Christian motherhood
  • Christian dating
  • Christian addiction recovery
  • Christian parents of special needs children

Write Amazing Content

A large component of choosing your niche will determine what you write about regularly. One strategy is to look at other media companies to find great ideas.

“I would suggest you watch movies by Hallmark Media/Up tv. They create amazing content around Christian themes. You can create stories or publish existing Christian stories to bring people to your blog and increase their interest in reading religious stuff from your blog.” advises Caroline Lee from  CocoSign.com

While Hallmark may have a great story, be sure to incorporate your own voice and experiences to make it authentic.

The great thing about creating a Christian blog is there are plenty of great stories (especially from the bible) you can use as inspiration.

Use Guest Posting

If you know someone else with a great story or message, allow them to share it on your blog.

Sometimes, it's hard to keep up with a regular posting schedule. Your readers want to see regular content so they can make visiting your faith-based blog a part of their habit day by day.

If you're unable to keep up with a high posting frequency, consider guest posting.

Guest posting will expand your audience, increase your online traffic, and get your name out in your market. Not to mention, you'll also be able to build helpful working relationships with other blog owners. This is a reliable way to build high-quality links directing traffic to your blog, raising your domain authority in the process.

Building SEO as a foundation.

In the Bible‘s book of Matthew, the quote “Build your house on a rock” is often cited as a reference to ensuring you build a strong foundation.

With a blog creating a strong search engine foundation is no different. Much of this is about learning and understanding SEO. Understanding how search works will allow you to outrank some mainstream Christian sites like iBelieve and Crosswalk.

LeaAnn Fox is a Christian blogging coach at  Kingdom Bloggers. Her site is two years old and gets 75k-85k visits per month.

Most of the traffic comes from organic search.

LeeAnn says you must “understand that a (successful) blog isn't a diary of your life. Your content must satisfy a search query (from search engines like Google) if you want to be found.”

Kingdom Bloggers has courses for creating a Christian Blog. Their training focuses on building the foundation.

Trying to do Everything from the start (building social platforms, list-building, creating products to sell, etc) will not support growth. Focus on your foundation (solid SEO-optimized content) first.

Everything else (building your email list, monetizing, etc) is dependent upon satisfying a search query. If your content satisfies a search query, Everything else will follow and be fruitful.

Leverage the power of WordPress Plugins

Using WordPress Plugins is a way to make creating your blog quicker and easier. Cody Murphy, the founder of VisualOak.com who teaches others to start their blog, recommends Yoast SEO. “YoastSEO is one of the plugins I always recommend for people starting a faith-based blog.”

The built-in Functionality provides helpful writing tips and suggestions for new bloggers just getting started. This will keep you focused on a single topic for each post and also help you in the long run as your blog will easy to read and optimized for search from the start.

Choose your blog name wisely

Having the right blog name can get your blog off to a good start by producing more visits, which turns into more traffic, which leads to higher conversions.

Domains come and go quickly, so use Namecheap tools to see if the domain name is available.

Spend time choosing the name of your blog. The name for your blog should be something that immediately signals to your target audience that they've come to the right place.

He also says to look at social media handles in addition to the domain name.

When you have a name in mind, check that the domain name and social media handles are available as it will make it much easier for your audience to find you.

For example, if you've decided on a blog called Young Christian Singles, check thatwww.youngchristiansingles.com is available and @youngchristiansingles is also free on Instagram and Twitter.

Leverage Video

YouTube, Tiktok, and Snapchat have popularized video and make it simple to connect with different audiences.

Creating a video doesn't have to be difficult, either. Retired pastor  Larry Buxton, has a streamlined process where he makes a video and uploads it to multiple places.

I use the PromptSmart app that allows me to convert a script and an iPad into a camera plus teleprompter. I practice and read the script, then record the video. I then post it on Youtube, and from there the YouTube function allows me to post it easily into other social media (Facebook, Linkedin, etc.).

Larry's process also includes loading the video onto his website. He will email his network in his weekly email series, encouraging them to follow and share the video with others on social media. Over time it's built a small and growing following.

IS NOW A GOOD TIME TO START A CHRISTIAN BLOG?

Creating a Christian blog is not an easy task, but it is well worth it if you love sharing your faith with others.

Once you get up and running, you'll be able to connect with potentially millions of people, a gratifying experience in itself.

A Christian faith-based blog is an evergreen niche. Which means it optimized content for search that remains relevant for long periods.

Because it remains fresh and relevant for long periods, the return on investment for evergreen content is much greater than a niche website that turns over frequently.

BEST Christian BLOG NICHES

Not all faith-based blogs are created equal. Choosing the right topic for your new blog is crucial for success.

The best way to start a Christian blog is to choose a niche that interests you the most and focus on that topic.

You want your writing to be fresh, engaging, and very entertaining so that people will keep coming back for more.

You'll also want to write content the search engines love.

Starting out, you'll want to choose a sub-niche. For example, the keywords for “Christian” will be near impossible to rank on Google and other search engines. But terms like “Christian Parenting” will be much more manageable.

You can use tools like Ahrefs to see what people are searching for on Google. Using their keyword finder option, you can type in your ideas and find the best performing content and strategies to get your blog post noticed.

Christian BLOG LOGO IDEAS

Having an effective, professional logo that can be used in print and on the web will help grow your business. Have a professional logo is a great step to drive traffic to your site.

Your Christian blog deserves a killer logo design! You'll want to create one that reflects your vision.

The best Christian blogs have a logo design that is clean, modern, and speaks to the people who would want to read about your faith.

If your Christian niche targets young professionals (20s-30s) and college students. The typography and imagery will likely be much different than if you are targeting retired Christians.

DESIGN YOUR CHRISTIAN BLOG LOGO FOR $5

Fiverr is filled with great designers, but also you have to remember you get what you pay for. If you spend a little time sifting through the hundreds of designers, you are sure to find one that fits your needs.

You can typically tell the quality of their work by portfolio and reviews. When hiring a logo design from Fiverr, you will want to look for someone that has plenty of excellent examples in their account, provide revisions, and have great reviews.

CREATING THE CHRISTIAN BLOG

To take your idea from domain name to actual website, you need to have a hosting plan.

A website “host” is just a computer/server space that you can rent every month from an online company.

You need to have your website computer files stored on a server that makes it easy for others to access online. And honestly, that's about all you need to know to get started as a Christian blogger.

Bottom line, you need to set up a hosting plan to have your WordPress site up and running.

Luckily, this is SUPER easy to do and only costs a few dollars a month when you use Bluehost.

BEST HOSTING FOR CHRISTIAN BLOGGING = BLUEHOST

I recommend that you go with Bluehost.

First of all, their hosting package options are cheap. For just a few dollars a month, you can be up and running with a fully functional blogging platform.

Second, they are reliable. Bluehost has been around for years, and they host millions of websites. Your messages on faith are not at risk to disappear overnight because the company goes away.

You can even host multiple domains on one hosting account! So, let's say you start AwesomeChristianWebsite, but then decide you also want to create a second website called CrazyChristianBlog.com.

Well, with Bluehost, you don't have to buy a second hosting account. For the same monthly price, you can host dozens of websites.

There are plenty of free options to start Christian Christian blogging, but you have far less control, and as it's not all that expensive, it's well worth it to use WordPress on a hosting provider like Bluehost.

To compete with mainstream faith blogs, you need to start and maintain your website. It takes some time to get everything set up, and there are many things to learn (I've got the bruises to prove it). You can read my full post here on setting up Bluehost hosting.
