Finding Seed Keywords with Long Tail Pro

Finding Seed Keywords with Long Tail Pro

Today, I want to show you how I quickly and easily find seed keywords.  These seed keywords are just the beginning of the process for finding profitable niche keywords.  As you will see in the video below, its important to take these seed keywords and generate additional related keywords as part of the brainstorming process.  By doing this you are able to look at thousands of potential keywords and then start filtering these down to the few that will actually meet your criteria.

You can input seed keywords into lots of various keyword generation tools or even use the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool.  However, as I show in the video below, if you use Long Tail Pro you can enter multiple seed keywords at once and quickly and easily filter these down to the few that meet your criteria automatically.  I make it look pretty simple in the video, but what I show here would take hours to accomplish using other keyword tools (including Market Samurai).  I know of no other keyword research software that allows you to enter in multiple keywords at once.  They all make you enter one keyword, filter, and then go back and enter another seed keyword – its a very slow and arduous process.

I also do not know of any other keyword tool that allows you to automatically filter your keywords based on CPC, search volume, and other criteria.  Finally, I didn’t show it explicitly in the video, but you can also automatically search for exact match domains.  So click the link below to watch the video.  I will be posting a second part tomorrow.

Anyway, I wanted to show the process of how to brainstorm for keywords using Amazon.com, Ebay.com, and Google instant.  These are some great methods to use if you simply cannot think of any keywords on your own.  I will post the second part of this video tomorrow which shows me making a decision on a good low competition keyword using Long Tail Pro.  I also show a couple of other features of the software.

Long Tail Pro is Available for Purchase!

In addition, I am officially announcing today on the blog that Long Tail Pro is available for beta testers!  I have been beta testing it for a few weeks now and have worked out the early bugs and existing users have given lots of great testimonials and feedback on the tool.  So, if you were not aware that Long Tail Pro is now available for purchase at a discounted price (since you are getting in on the beta version) – now you are!

You can see more demo videos or purchase Long Tail Pro right here:

Check out Long Tail Pro Demo Videos!

While you are there, you can read some of the early testimonials and see some of the other functions of the software.  I will be posting some other videos here on the blog in the near future, but I initially just wanted to let you know that its available.

I am in the process of adding a couple of additional features before I officially release it at the standard price.  (But of course anyway who buys now will get all the future updates for free).

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video and that the tips I gave for finding seed keywords are useful.  If you have any questions about Long Tail Pro or anything else covered in this post or video, let me know!

How Long Tail Pro Can Help You Capture Way More Search Engine Traffic

If your business could benefit in any way from getting more search engine traffic, I have some good news.

Search engines are in love with long tail keywords! If you are able to provide relevant content targeting these long tail keywords, then you can see a dramatic increase to the amount of traffic Google and other search engines send you.

Long Tail Pro is a powerful keyword research tool that makes finding these valuable long tail keywords a breeze.

What are “long tail keywords”? Essentially, these are words or phrases that people type into the search engines to find very specific things. Rather than searching for “dog training” a user might search for “how to potty train a pitbull”.

This is an example of a Long Tail Keyword. To visualize how Long Tail Keywords work...

Your tool is cool, but it’s limited to the 800 that the GKT gives you.

I’ve been using Keyword Tool Dominator, and its similar to your tool but there are a couple differences that I like with KTD – like advanced filters, it finds thousands and thousands of keywords instead of just the 800 for each seed kw because it pays google to do multiple searches or something like that.

The biggest thing for me is, it’s not a monthly subscription – you pay for what you need, and it’s cheap. I did research on over 70,000 keywords for like $6, and I found all the keywords I could imagine.

    • Shuck says:

Just noticed that yours is $77 one time, my bad. I still don’t see the value in having to keep putting in seed keywords.

    • Spencer says:

Hey Schuck – many people would rather just pay a one time fee than a fee for every time they pull a bunch of keywords. LTP lets you enter multiple keywords at once (as shown in the video) which is a huge timesaver.

    Spencer,

    Greetings!

Great KW tool and information. The KW tool is using Yahoo data for the number of backinks. Is this data still accurate and viable to determine backlink infomation? Other tools use a different source for their data.

    • Spencer says:

Yep, its still viable – this is the data I use to build my niche websites and I do pretty decent. There are other sources of links, but Yahoo has always been the most comprehensive…

  6. Muzi Mohale says:

You’ve indeed managed to convince me to purchase your software…am especially sold by the fact that i can search for 5 different keywords at once. I spend a lot of time researching for keywords on google keyword tools.

Now compared to Google Keyword Tools, how reliable are your results…since at the end of the day we’re targeting adsense which is a Google product and you’re an independent software?

About for local, am South African based…will I be able to get South African data?

    • Spencer says:

Yes, you will be able to select any country you want – just like in Google Adwords! So, you can select to look at South African data or US data, or whatever you would like. The results are 100% reliable since they actually come from google adwords data.

  7. Steve Eason says:

Great run through. Keyword Research is my nemesis. For some reason it constantly scares me off. I just never felt like I could find a keyword that will be successful.

With the new tool I feel much more confident and I think this is really going to change the way I do my research. And hopefully it will change my results dramatically!

Thanks again for the help and guidance!

  8. Jon says:

Spencer – Fantastic work on Long Tail Pro! I’ve been doing niche keyword research for over a year now with other tools and when I used LTP the other night for the first time, it saved me a TON of time – I’m sticking with it. Thanks for a SWEET quality piece of software.

  9. Shae Bynes says:

Spencer, I’m in….I spend *hours* on keyword research and this is going to save me a ton of time. Can’t wait to dig in. Thanks!

    • Spencer says:

      Awesome – Thanks Shae!

      • Shae Bynes says:

Spencer, I just wanted to come back to tell you that your Long Tail Pro is terrific….. I saved *hours* of time on keyword research late last week and already have a new site up and running and another one in the works. I’d still be doing the keyword research right now if I were only using MS as I’d been doing. Thanks!

        • Spencer says:

Shae – that’s great to hear! Thanks for coming back and sharing your experience with Long Tail Pro. Glad its been a huge time saver for you!

          • Shae Bynes says:

Spencer, one question for you…what tool do you use to track the number of backlinks for your specific sites? I don’t see that in LTP (unless I missed it), so I suspect you use something else to track that?

            • Hey Shae! Great to see you here too.

You can use the free version of Traffic Travis to track your back links.

You can also pull up your site on backlinkwatch.com… but for some reason my anchor text doesn’t show up when I search for my back links through this site.

  10. Thanks, that is all I can say. It has been overwhelming for me to the point of throwing in the towel. Seeing this makes me realize that it is possible. I have to get down to work.
    Thanks
    Grace

    Thanks Spencer.

    Thanks Spencer.

  15. Paula Mooney says:

Okay, you’ve just about convinced me to buy LTP.

On your next video, can you please show the exact match domain feature and other stuff? That part you went thru kind of fast with the options.

    I really love your stuff.

At first I was like, “I can do this stuff on Google Adwords Keyword Tool — even narrowing down the CPC and traffic limits I want.”

But yes, Google doesn’t work as well when you put in multiple search terms — plus, I was popping over to who.is to look at age site and all that, so I can see how ltp will save me time. Thanks!

  16. Gautam says:

    Hi Spencer:

Really useful video on using your LTP…
I am using this for a while and will be using it for all my KW
    research!

Please don’t keep on adding features like MS and make it a coplicated KW tool ….just keep this KISS!

    Cheers!

    • Spencer says:

Thanks Guatam – glad you are enjoying Long Tail Pro! I don’t have any major feature additions planned. The only additions would be more to optimize the existing options. I prefer to keep things as simple as possible as well!

  17. Chris says:

    Hi Spencer,

I bought the beta version of LongTailPro last night and I’ve been playing around with it. Looks pretty good! I have a question though: When you ask LTP to check for domain availability and it comes back with a “p” in a green circle next to the domain what does this mean? Sorry I may be missing the obvious here but I couldn’t find any reference to this in the documentation and when I manually check a domain that has been flagged with this symbol it appears that the domain has already been registered.

    Many thanks,

    Chris.

  18. Spencer – Question – I hope this is not a dumb question, but Once you have the keywords, what do you do with them ?

Do you create a separate article for each of them ?

What about categories ? Do you group the keywords together ?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

    • Spencer says:

I typically target 1 primary keyword per website. But then I will have secondary keywords on the same site so Yes, I create separate articles for each of them. I use categories that makes sense to humans on my websites. This may or may not group keywords together. Hope that helps.

  19. eric says:

    hi, Spencer .
I really like your posts. But sorry for that I have so many questions.

    1) regarding your 200 niche websites, do you use same ads code from google for all these websites? or you apply different ad code for different batches of website.

    2) regarding main keywords and long tail keyword. lets say main keyword is ” lose fat” and long tail keywords are ” exercise to lose fat” “yoga to lose fat”. how many articles do you produce for main keywords and how many for long tail keyword.

    3) when you build your website, do you use same template? or you customize them ? or you buy from someone ? any recommendation about themes source?

    thanks again for your help.

    Eric

    • Spencer says:

      1. Yes, you can use the exact same ad code on all your sites. (I often use different ad code when I use different themes or for other reasons, but you don’t have to).
      2. Only one article will use the keyword in the title for both main keyword or secondary. Actually, if your main keyword is lose fat, you might also do “yoga to lose fat” but more likely you should choose seconday keywords that do not include your primary keyword in it – like “how to get thin” for example would be a better long tail keyword. You don’t want to use your primary keyword too many times, so be careful. If all of your articles have the keyword “lose fat” in them, it will not look natural at all.
      3. No. I use several different templates and use new ones all the time. I only customize them to get my adsense code to display just right. I just usually do a free search on wordpress.org for themes.

  20. mack says:

What do you say now that Yahoo site explorer is closing? kind of affects your tool, dont you think?

    • Spencer says:

Yahoo has been talking about closing the API for over a year now; and now its pushed back to Sept 2011. You can see the info here: http://developer.yahoo.com/search/siteexplorer/. In addition, this is for the API which may have no effect whatsoever on the actual link data provided by Yahoo Site Explorer. So, there is really no way to know if the link data will ever go away or not. But even if it does, there are several other readily available sources which we can switch to very quickly. So, there will really be no noticeable effect to users of the software either way…no worries!

  21. Neil says:

Thanks for creating LTP! After researching options for KW research the only other choice for me was SECockpit, but I decided the additional cost didn’t justify it. And I disagree with the previous poster that said don’t add any more features to LTP –the more features you can give it the better as far as I’m concerned!

    • Spencer says:

You are welcome! And if enough users want additional features, I am always open to adding them. I plan on taking a pretty balanced approach – it will be kept simple to use, but feature rich only as needed.

  22. I currently use market samurai and can see a lot more benefits to using your software over MS!

My big question is this: At the moment MS is a bit flaky in returning strength of competition and is always updating, I think to try to overcome these problems.

It is starting to get on my nerves, because when you’re in the mood to do keyword research, you need the information delivering quickly, so you can make decisions.

I don’t know how or from where MS pulls its data and I also know that google have been messing about with their API on a serious scale. I know LTP is not related at all with MS, but I would just like to check before buying that the same problems they are encountering isn’t blighting your software.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Spencer says:

      John:
As you will note from the videos – Long Tail Pro does not currently pull “Strength of Competition”. It does pull title competition which is a more relevant factor however.

  23. Ok, that’s great, about to go to http://www.longtailpro.com and buy, but just need a scale of how time consuming the research phase might be for me.

As a novice keyword researcher, how long do you think it would take me to find a niche site keyword candidate.

I know this is a ridiculous question because you don’t know my strengths and weaknesses etc. But if I’m of average intelligence and have your software and nothing else to distract me, could I find a goer within 6-12 hours of intensive searching?

A goer being a phrase that receives over 1000exact/mth very weak page 1 competition, but with a good cpc and more than 5 advertisers.

    Thanks for your time.
